All Fired Up

Delighted to have finally started delivering this exciting project in Abraham Derby Academy, which has been in the pipeline for some years. Funds were secured by the art department some time ago but we have struggled to fit the project into the busy academic year at the school, as well as my own schedule.

All Fired Up is now well under way and Year 9 BTEC students have been working with me in a number of workshops exploring the nature of clay from very soft to leather hard; it's mark making qualities ready to design and make their own tiles using the schools houses as the sea and inspiration.  I gave an introductory talk on an overview of my work followed by an engaging question and answer session, and looking through my sketch pads and portfolios.

As part of the students study programme, their homework task involved researching Ruth Gibson Ceramics, my inspiration, methodology etc. The results were fascinating and I assisted in choosing outstanding work for awards and an overall winner. Some of the work I selected can be seen below.

We were delighted to welcome experienced ceramic artist Mike Griffiths to join us in the tile making sessions and the tiles are now bisque fired and are awaiting glaze application and firing. The results will be installed outside the main entrance to e school and aim to be completed before Christmas 2017.
