Creative Workshops in Words and Clay were held in the Pontesbury area of South Shropshire, celebrating the impressive Ironage heritage of the area, this project was delivered by ceramic artist Ruth Gibson and poet Jean Atkin, both experienced and passionate about delivering community projects. Local archaeologists and historical re-enactors Mike and Teri Greene brought artefacts and a vast knowledge of Ironage history to share in workshops to inform and inspire the poetry and clay work.
Impressions of the Past offered free workshops in clay and poetry about the Iron Age landscape, and focusing on local landmarks such as the hillforts of Pontesford and Earl’s Hill. Jean and Ruth lead active, practical workshops which took place both outdoors and under cover, inspiring everyone to respond to these remarkable places and their long human histories.Our workshops took place from February to April 2017, working with children from Minsterley Primary School, Pontesbury Brownies, local Home Educated families, a local Woodcraft Folk Group as well as people from Pontesbury and the wider community.
The final green oak palisade was installed in May 2017 by a team of volunteers guided by Ruth and Benchart partner Huw Roberts.
