Clay Mandala Community Arts Events
Ruth's Community Arts Involvement
Over the past few years, Ruth has organised and delivered a range of community arts events in and around Shrewsbury. These activities have focused on simple mark-making techniques using clay, providing an accessible and creative outlet for participants of all ages and abilities.
Event Locations and Participation
Some of Ruth's workshops have taken place in locations such as the Reabrook and, more recently, Longden Road Cemetery. Community members may have participated in these events, experiencing hands-on clay work in unique natural settings.
Inclusive Techniques and Family Engagement
The mark-making technique is straightforward and enjoyable, making it accessible to everyone. It is particularly suited to being shared among family members across generations, fostering creativity and togetherness.
Natural Materials and Surface Decoration
Participants gather natural materials—leaves, grasses, seed heads, bark, and flowers—to create intricate surface decorations on pieces of clay. These elements are used to develop beautiful patterns, enhancing the visual appeal of each clay tile.
Workshop Structure and Collaborative Artwork
During the workshops, attendees taper long, organically shaped tiles. These individual tiles will then be assembled into a group artwork by the end of the weekend. The collaborative piece is designed to be circular in form and is referred to as a Clay Mandala.
Future Exhibitions
Later in the year, Ruth intends to exhibit some of her fired ceramic Mandalas at the Shrewsbury Arts Trail, showcasing the collective creativity and community spirit that these workshops embody.
